What is the subgrade-preparation spec?
Compacted subgrade with no soft spots underfoot, 4–6 inches of compacted #57 or ABC aggregate base under a residential driveway, positive drainage away from any structure, and a 10-mil vapor barrier under any slab inside a heated space or immediately abutting a house. §01Why the subgrade decides the slab
Concrete carries compressive load well and tensile load badly. When a slab settles unevenly, the top of the slab goes into tension over the settlement and the slab cracks. Every crack in a poured slab that is not at a control joint is, with rare exceptions, a subgrade story.
The subgrade is prepared before the forms are set, checked before the reinforcement is placed, and re-checked in the pour-day checklist before the truck is on the way. Three things carry the weight: compaction, drainage and — where the slab is against a heated space — a vapor barrier.
§02Compaction
The subgrade is compacted in lifts against a plate compactor for granular soils and a jumping jack for clayey soils. The check is a proof-roll: a loaded truck driven across the pad, with any spot that rebounds more than a half inch flagged and re-worked.

Cohesive Piedmont clay in and around Charlotte holds moisture: a subgrade that reads dense on a dry October morning can pump under a truck in a wet March. The proof-roll is repeated in wet weather; if the pad pumps, the pour is postponed and the pad is re-worked.
§03Aggregate base
The aggregate base sits between the compacted subgrade and the concrete. On a residential driveway a 4-inch compacted layer of #57 washed stone or ABC (aggregate base course) is standard; a heavy-vehicle drive or a commercial slab takes 6 inches.
- #57 washed stone — 3/4″ to 1″ open-graded stone. Drains fast, does not hold water. Preferred over an ABC where drainage is the priority.
- ABC — aggregate base course — a graded 3/4″-down mix of stone and fines. Compacts to a dense, stable base. Preferred where compaction against a heavy load is the priority.
- Depth check — a spike driven through the compacted base against a tape; recorded on the job sheet before pour.
§04Drainage
A pad without drainage is a pad with cracks. The check is done at the compacted grade before the base is placed and again after.
- Positive fall of 1/8 inch per foot minimum, away from any structure.
- No ponded water anywhere on the pad on a wet-check morning.
- Perimeter drain — French drain, trench drain or graded swale — where the pad sits below any surrounding hardscape.
- Downspout leaders extended off the pad footprint, not onto it.
- Trench drain in the slab — cast in a channel drain across a driveway apron, cast in around a pool-deck perimeter — noted on the job sheet before form-set.
§05Vapor barrier
A vapor barrier is a plastic sheet between the aggregate base and the concrete slab. It stops soil moisture from wicking up through the slab into a heated space above it.

Where the vapor barrier is used, the aggregate base directly under it is finer material so it does not tear the sheet. A tear the size of a coin in the barrier under a heated slab shows up years later as an efflorescence line on the slab or on a floor finish over it.
§06Subgrade check on the day
The subgrade check on pour-day is a re-read against the job sheet. Anything that has changed since the pad was prepared is re-worked before the truck is on the way.
- Proof-roll on foot — no soft spots underfoot.
- Grade check with a laser or straight edge — no dips against the finish elevation.
- Drainage check — no ponded water; downspouts still redirected.
- Vapor barrier check — no rips, no un-taped seams, no gaps at penetrations.
